Quit my job with no backup plan. Why? Because after cancer, burnout, and years of being a “yes” person in a thankless job, I realized I was done sacrificing my sanity for a paycheck.

No regrets. Just deep breaths, uncertainty, and a shot at building something of my own.

(I Am Not) What I Am

I quit my job with no plan, no savings, and a whole lot of fear—but also with the urgent need to start living on my own terms. After surviving cancer, I realized time is too precious to spend miserable. This is the messy beginning of figuring it all out—from emotional tattoos to writer’s block and App Store distractions. It’s not polished, but it’s mine.

Shannon Laidlaw is an aspiring freelance writer, photographer, and hopeful globe-trotter. When she’s not speaking about herself in the third person (a skill she’s reluctantly mastered), you can find her heroically holding down her couch, half-watching Parks and Rec for the 510th time, and tapping through an impressive collection of dumb phone games like it’s her part-time job.

She’s also a stage 3 ovarian cancer survivor—which, fingers crossed, was a one-season special and not a recurring series. This blog is where she spills the tea (is that what the kids say?) on all the delightful chaos life has handed her—issues, subscriptions, and everything in between.
